Simultaneous

Simultaneous translation, i.e. instantaneous translation from one language into another, is the best way for a foreign audience to fully understand what is being said by speakers who are speaking in a different language.

SIMULTANEOUS OVER HEADSETS

It is usually performed by two interpreters per booth who translate instantly into the working languages, taking turns every 20 to 30 minutes during a 7-hour working day. Interpretations with only one interpreter per booth are only allowed if the duration does not exceed one hour, maximum one and a half hours. A soundproof booth for each language, headsets, microphones and technical support are required for this service. In some cases where there are only a few participants and if the room allows it, the bidule system can be used, which saves costs but has a lower output quality.

SIMULTANEOUS REMOTE

Although it has been around for a long time, it was during COVID that it became widespread, as it is the only way to remotely translate speeches at international conferences.

It is used with the help of electronic platforms (Zoom, Microsoft Teams, Google Meet, etc.) to which both the interpreters and the participants must be connected. A computer, webcam, headset, microphone, a stable Internet connection and good room acoustics are required.

Consecutive

Consecutive translation is carried out in the physical presence of the parties involved: the interpreter listens to the speaker’s speech taking notes and after 5-10 minutes faithfully translates it into the other language. Two interpreters are required for a full day’s work and one interpreter for up to half a day.
