SWORN TRANSLATION
A ‘sworn’ translation is a translation that retains the same legal value as the original document. By swearing an oath before the Justice of the Peace, the translator certifies the full correspondence between the translated text and the original document.
Sworn translations are often requested for documents, such as diplomas, certificates, contracts, judicial or notarial acts, that must be presented to Italian or foreign authorities.

WHAT IT IS
Sworn affidavit is the swearing in of the translation of a document, i.e. the attestation by the translator that the translated text corresponds to the original text.
WHEN IT IS NEEDED
Sworn affidavits give legal value to translations. It is often requested for civil and criminal record certificates (e.g. for Italian citizenship applications), for qualifications (e.g. equivalency, enrolment at foreign universities), for notarial deeds (e.g. deeds of sale, powers of attorney, hereditary successions) and judicial deeds (e.g. summonses, appeals, sentences).
HOW TO PREPARE
To certify a translation, a paper file must be prepared consisting of the following documents bound together in this order:
- text to be translated;
- translation;
- oath minutes.
The text to be translated can be attached in original, certified copy or plain copy. It is necessary to enquire at the institution to which the documentation will be submitted in order to identify the correct method.
REVENUE STAMPS
One € 16.00 revenue stamp must be affixed for every 4 pages of translation, including the oath minutes.
WHERE IT IS DONE
Swearing in is normally carried out at the Justice of the Peace offices. The translator must go there in person and sign the affidavit in the presence of the official.
